About The Gateway School

More Than a School — A Place to Grow, Belong and Thrive

Founded 53 years ago in 1972 by Mrs Johnson, inspired by her child with Down Syndrome, our school began humbly with just 6 learners. Since then, The Gateway School has moved to two other sites to where it is now situated in Ruimsig since 1994. The school has grown into a dynamic community providing holistic education to 364 learners with special educational needs, encompassing all disability groups.

Who are we?

The Gateway School is a public special school rendering educational services to learners with a severe intellectual disability. The school caters for learners ranging in ages from five (5) to eighteen (18) years and is representative of the total spectrum of the South African community. The languages of learning and teaching are Afrikaans and English and the school offers alternative methods of communication for non-verbal learners, ensuring an inclusive and accessible learning environment for all.

Vision

The Gateway School is committed to creating a nurturing and Inclusive learning Community that harnesses the unique abilities of every learner to enable them to live functional and fulfilling lives.

Mission

The school is committed to:

  • Provide a specialised educational setting that focuses on individualised support and the holistic development and meaningful inclusion of every learner.

  • In collaboration with families, professionals and the wider community, the school aims to equip our learners with skills, knowledge and confidence to maximise their independence and to make meaningful contributions to society.

  • Strive to foster a safe and welcoming environment that promotes dignity, respect and equal opportunities for all.

  • Ongoing research-based practices and continuous improvement and innovation to ensure the best possible outcomes for the learners.
