How to Apply to The Gateway School.

The Gateway School offers a clear, step-by-step admissions process for learners aged 5 to 18 with severe intellectual disabilities. Below are the necessary steps to begin your application and also which documents are required for placement.

Admissions Process at The Gateway School

At The Gateway School, we are dedicated to providing specialised education for learners with severe intellectual disabilities, aged 5 to 18 years. We follow a structured admissions process to ensure that every learner is placed in an environment suited to their individual needs. Our program offers education up to Grade 5, following the Differentiated CAPS curriculum. Below, we outline the steps involved in the admissions process:

1.  Initial Inquiry and Screening

On initial enquiry about enrolling a learner at The Gateway School, our Admissions Team guide you through the process of applying for placement at our school. They will provide the necessary information required for the application process. 

2.  Referral to the Relevant District

To begin the admissions process, parents will need to apply through the appropriate Education District Office

3.  Documentation and Application Pack

The following documents will be required when submitting an application for placement:

  • Learner’s birth certificate
  • Parent/guardian identification documents
  • Proof of residence
  • SNA document if applicable
  • School report if applicable
  • Doctor’s and specialist reports (if applicable), including:
    • Chromosome analysis report (for learners with Down Syndrome)
    • Neurologist or paediatric neurologist report (Learners with ASD)
    • Educational psychologist report
    • Clinic card

4.  District Processing and Follow-Up

Please note that the application process is dealt with at the Education District Office. If a parent wishes to follow up they can contact district office directly for an update. On receipt of a learner’s application the school’s admissions officer will contact the parent to schedule an interview.

5.  Finalization of Admission

During the screening process, the school’s admissions team will determine the learner’s support needs and class placement. This is followed by a series of interviews with key departments, including:

  • Medical
  • Finance
  • Transport
  • Deputy Principal

On verification of the learner information the District based Support Team, the learner’s placement will be confirmed telephonically or via email.
